Condition monitoring based survey (CMBS) is now available on propeller shaft and bearing metal on board ships under some conditions. But, regarding the lubricating surfaces of a diesel engine, it must be inspected by a surveyor every five years, which can be called a time-based survey. The authors are trying to find the possibility of CMBS for diesel engines on board ships. This paper reports the approach by analysis of oil containing foreign metal wear particles. The authors embedded two foreign metal (Cobalt and Yttrium) in piston ring test piece and an another foreign metal (Barium) in white metal test piece, and run Pin on Disk Wear Tests by a private wear test machine. The wear test was run for 97 hours under the condition of oil temperature: 100 deg C and load of 3500 N. The oil in service was analysed by a spectrometric oil analysis program and a cerography analysis method. The authors conclude that: 1. Cobalt may be usable as an indicator, which is inserted in a cylinder liner or a piston ring. 2. The application of Barium as an indicator which is inserted in a bearing metal (white metal in this case) must be required furthermore by extended studies due to its doubt contributing to an abrasive wear between a shaft and a bearing. 3. When plastic is used for fixing powder-like metal as an indicator in bearing metal, Polyester can be usable below 100 deg C of the test oil temperature.
