At Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., a database called 'Operating Ship Management System', in which data on accidents and failures occurred onboard ships under management are summarized, has been built since 1996. Using this database, marine casualties including accidents and failures have been analytically assessed, with measures to prevent them drawn up, and the effects of such preventive measures validated. With this system, it is possible to process statistical data from various viewpoints according to specific objectives such as data by ship management company, ship type, equipment, accident/failure type, and cause through the link with the ship database such as ship type. Furthermore, accident/failure-specific repair cost data have been inputted since 2001. As a result, it has become possible to carry out loss analyses for accidents and failures. Here, the focus is put on main diesel engines, which have always occupied a large proportion of machinery failures from among the results of analytical assessments implemented so far, and the reliability of large marine main diesel engines by manufacturer and engine model as viewed by users are introduced, displaying at the same time, actual machinery accidents and failures experienced in ships under our management as our proposals for the design philosophy and new engine model development trends observed by each engine builder.
