The requirement of high-speed vessels is increasing. In these conditions, Niigata has entered this market since 1980s. After the development of Niigata V16FX high speed diesel engine in 1992, V20FX high speed diesel engine that covers an output range of 3000 kW to 4000 kW has been developed to cope with the rising demand of bigger high density engines. 16V20FX achieves a world top level mass to weight ratio of 3.15 kg/kW and an optimum design for the high-speed vessels. Moreover, to reduce life cycle cost, this engine realizes the longer life of parts, lower specific fuel consumption and lower lubricating oil consumption than conventional engines. Six 16V20FXs have been delivered in 2002, and the service has been started in 2003. Up to now, these engines have been operated without problems. In this use, as idle and low speed operation hours are relatively much and it is accelerated to high speed, the deterioration of smoke during low load including idle and transient operating conditions were issues. To cope with the problem, a sequential turbocharging system with four turbochargers, a mechanical supercharger and an slip controlled clutch have been adopted, and the target performance including smoke has been achieved. In sequential turbocharging system, two turbochargers work at low load, and four turbochargers at medium and high load. The Lysholm compressor is adopted as the supercharger especially to improve smoke at idle and low load. The slip controlled clutch is also adopted to increase the idle speed. In this paper, the above system and the test results are presented including the results of structure analysis of main parts.
