In addition to low fuel oil and lubricating oil consumption to reduce the running costs, high reliability plus maintenance-free durability are required of four-stroke medium speed diesel engines. To match not only these requirements of direct users but also the needs of environmental conservation, Daihatsu Diesel has developed a new compact 4-stroke medium speed diesel engine the DC-17. The DC-17, which Daihatsu introduced at the beginning of 21st century, is mainly used as an auxiliary engine for bulk carriers. The DC-17 covers the lowest power output ranges of marine auxiliary engines that run mainly on heavy fuel oil. For the design of the air inlet ports, which has a great impact on mixing heavy fuel oil into intake air, the optimal swirl and air flow rate coefficient was determined by computer simulation. High-pressure fuel injection pump is well matched with a non-cooled fuel nozzle and a turbocharger. Consequently the DC-17 can be low fuel oil consumption and exhaust emission engine. The cooling water and lubricating oil passage configuration of the DC-17 have been modified from DK models. Cooling water and lubricating oil passages are cast in gear case. Plus pumps, coolers and other auxiliaries are concentrated in the front of engine. Consequently the DC-17 is a simple and easy-to-handle engine and can reduce the number of exterior pipes and constituent parts. Main moving parts and constituent elements have been verified by computer analysis. This paper describes the design features of the principal components of the DC-17 and an additional new electronic monitoring and control device that Daihatsu developed in parallel with development of the DC-17.
