In 2000 Saab Automobile decided to start a project for a new underbody coating facility using PVC material instead of polyurethane material. The virtual tool IGRIP was utilized through all phases of the project. IGRIP was to be used as a visualization tool for engineers and for operators and maintenance, and for presentations to management to reach a better understanding. IGRIP was to function as a design support tool and the system should work as a simulation tool for the robots as well as for fixing devices and application. In the pre-study phase IGRIP was used to study and evaluate different concepts and robot types. At the beginning of the engineering phase, in IGRIP a 3D model was created of the first layout proposal. The model was used to visualize and coordinate the equipment design for the robot cells and the manual observer work area. The model was continuously developed and used to pack different body styles into the robot cells and to simulate robot working ranges and mechanical fixing devices. For the Request for Quotation the complete IGRIP model was included in the bid package sent to potential suppliers. In the design phase the model was continuously developed by the supplier. The simulation of robot working range, the type of robot, design of spray gun and simulation of the PVC application were done. Thanks to the consistent utilization of IGRIP as a tool through the entire project the installation, commissioning and try-out were very successful. The model is today used in new car projects and model changes as a tool for Process Driven Product Design.
