Active steering systems which control the wheel steering angle have been successful on the market since a short time. These systems increase the driving stability and shorten the brake distance in combination with DSC. Further, the steering effort at low speed is reduced while at the same time safe handling at high speed is ensured. This paper presents an investigation of different new power-steering system concepts for full steer-by-wire functionality. It has been pointed out that presently only hydraulic or hybrid systems can meet the future requirements of middle class and upper class cars. Simulation results have shown that among the proposed new hydraulic concepts a closed-centre system has the highest potential for a significant reduction of the fuel consumption of present hydraulic power-steering systems. It has been demonstrated that the best input power performance of such systems can be achieved if the leakage flow through the valve assembly is small which makes the force control more difficult. Future research in this field should focus on: -Force control of closed-centre systems and development of pumps, which meet the requirements of closed-centre systems; -Development of electric or hydraulic actuators to enable full steer-by-wire functionality for open-centre steering systems and optimising the power consumption of open-centre power-steering systems.
