Current approaches evaluate the intensity of vehicle reactions to crosswind. However, vehicles displaying intense reactions to crosswind are not necessarily perceived as crosswind-sensitive by the driver. This paper introduces a new approach to evaluate a vehicle's crosswind behaviour. The presented approach differs from current approaches in the fact, that the driver's subjective evaluation is derived from his steering actions when compensating for stochastic crosswind. However, applying current approaches to a set of different vehicles sometimes leads to non-uniform evaluations and does not correlate with the driver's subjective perception in principal. Vehicles displaying intense reactions to crosswind are not necessarily perceived as crosswind sensitive by the driver and vice versa. A driver basically adapts his steering behaviour to the vehicle characteristics and, thus, acts as a perceptive sensor. For that reason, his steering response reflects even slight variations of the vehicle characteristics. The approach utilises this effect and derives the driver's subjective evaluation from the characteristic of his steering actions when compensating for stochastic crosswind. That makes it possible to measure the driver's subjective evaluation. In order to early investigate the crosswind behaviour of the overall driver-vehicle system, a virtual driver is modelled based on the gained results. The virtual driver adapts his steering behaviour to the vehicle characteristics similar to real drivers and thereby statistically predicts the driver's response specific for the vehicle to be investigated. An application is particularly proper for early investigating the driver-vehicle interaction under stochastic crosswind in simulations. The potential of this kind of application is illustrated in this paper by means of a sensitivity analysis.
