In the flow field around a generic car model a comprehensive study, using LDA (Laser Doppler Anemometry), HWA (Hot-Wire Anemometry) and static pressure measurements, was performed. The aims of the study were twofold: first, to supply a detailed data set acquired under well defined boundary conditions to be used as reference data for numerical simulations in general and the validation and verification of refined turbulence models in particular; and second, to investigate the generic flow and turbulence structure around the simplified car model. Because of the facts that the losses in the detached wake region account for the major contribution to the aerodynamic drag, and the prediction accuracy of the wake is a quite selective criteria for the turbulence models, the study focused to the wake behind the car model. In addition to the usual approach to sum up all the measured velocity fluctuations in the present study an attempt was made to filter the data into different scales in order to distinguish between large scale fluctuations of the velocities in the wake flow and the turbulent fluctuations superimposed.
