After giving a brief overview on the architecture in future vehicles board power systems, the basic requirements for the main converter are summarized. A three-rail buckderived solution with coupled inductors as well as a 6 rail solution are presented. In addition, a pushpull solution with integrated magnetics was considered in a comparative study for a 1-kW application. The comparison is based on detailed calculations and electrical simulations. The most promising solution for applications without insulation seems to be the 6-rail converter, due to simplicity of the single power circuits leading to high efficiency and a advantageous thermal design in conjunction with lowest stress for capacitors. The high effective frequency allows also minimized filter efforts at the input and output.
