The Railway Noise Test Rig (RNTR), introduced and described in (1,2), on the factory premises of Lucchini Sweden in Surahammar has been further developed. In order to assess sound power and sound radiation directivity from the wheelset and the track for any given combination of vertical and lateral wheel-rail contact load, mechanical-acoustic transfer functions are measured with either a reflecting or an absorbing ground boundary condition. Since the wheel and the rail in the RNTR are not in physical contact, and a numerical model is adopted for the contact receptance, the RNTR enables simulation of different combinations of contact geometry and operating conditions for the same measurement set-up of wheelset and track. The RNTR provides a means for detailed measurement of the sound radiation pattern from wheel and rail.
