The LPV (Linear Parameter-Varying) approach is applied in the nonlinear modeling and control of vehicle suspension systems. In the LPV modeling the dynamics of the hydraulic actuator is considered. In the LPV model for control design, both the performance requirements and the model uncertainties are taken into consideration. The trade-off between the performance demands is guaranteed by using parameter dependent gains. Simulation examples illustrate the modeling of a quarter-car model and the control design. The controlled system based on the LPV controller is compared with a linear controller based on the Hinfinite norm. It is demonstrated that in an active suspension design problem a controller based on a linear model might be conservative. In the control design based on the LPV method, different weighting functions in the optimization criterion are applied in order to take the balance between the performance criteria into consideration.
