Ford has unveiled the H2RV at its 2003 Ford Motor Company Centennial Celebration. The H2RV vehicle was also driven during the Centennial Celebration by three time Formula One Grand Prix Champion Jackie Stewart. The H2RV is an industry first by an OEM that demonstrates the concept and marriage of a HEV powertrain with a supercharged Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) that propels the vehicle. The powertrain utilizes 5000-PSI (350 bar) Compressed Gaseous Hydrogen (CGH) as fuel, a supercharged 2.3L internal combustion engine, a 25 kW traction motor drive, converter-less Modular Hybrid Transmission System (MHTS), regenerative braking, an advanced lithium ion battery, Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), electronic throttle, and a Vehicle System Controller (VSC). The vehicle could deliver a projected fuel economy of 45 mpg and near zero emissions without any compromises to comfort and performance. The Compressed Gaseous Hydrogen is stored on-board in three 5000-PSI cylinders. One cylinder is located in a self-contained enclosure in the vehicle's cargo area. The remaining cylinders are stored under the vehicle's cargo area. Stainless steel plumbing lines supply fuel from the rear-mounted cylinders to a transversely mounted supercharged engine located in the front of the vehicle. There are a myriad of solenoid valves, pressure regulators, relief valves, and thermally activated relief devices that interact to supply fuel successfully and safely from the CGH storage system to the engine. Both active and passive devices are provided for hydrogen venting. The coexistence of hydrogen and High Voltage in the vehicle also presents unique challenges in terms of vehicle packaging and safety systems.
