Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) have been attracting much attention in the auto industry due to environmental concerns and due to the likelihood that some other alternatives such as fuel cell vehicles may not be ready for mass production in the next 5-10 years. An HEV typically comprises two powertrains - a conventional, internal combustion engine driven powertrain and an electric drive. In order to achieve better fuel economy and emissions without compromising vehicle performance, a sophisticated control system is required to seamlessly integrate the two powertrains. Clearly, modeling of a HEV is imperative to such a control system development. This paper describes the development and validation of a parallel-series powertrain HEV model. This is accomplished by describing the derivation of a mathematical representation of the HEV using Bond Graphs technique, and its simulation model construction, and by comparing experimental vehicle test data with simulation results based on the test conditions. Model validation demonstrates that the developed model is a valid representation of the HEV, and can be utilized for effective control system design and development.
