The developments in the direction of vehicle safety have taken the form of making cars more intelligent in terms of performance. The innovations in the modern cars are based on new technological developments in electronics. Adaptive cruise control system utilizing scanning laser-radar-sensor is one of such innovation. The sensor must detect targets ahead and measure the distance precisely. The high power pulsed diode laser that becomes the most important part as an 'eye' of the laser-radar-sensor. A complex degradation mechanism of the high power 34W-class diode laser under the accelerated conditions has been proposed based on the life-test and EBIC image analysis. To prevent failure, two approaches were applied in this present work. One approach is to redesign the reflectance of front facet. The COD level was increased by reducing the value of reflectance to 15% in comparison with a conventional value. The other one is by solving the oxidation matter at the front facet in the fabrication processing of diode laser. Shortening exposure time of the front facet under the atmosphere was found to be very effective in increasing the COD level. These accomplished results meet the robust demanded level of the automobile application. The developed diode laser has been put on the market this year as the laser-radar-sensor for ACC system. Furthermore, we predict that this laser radar technology contributes greatly to the vehicle safety field in a future automobile society.
