The critical speed of the new Russian freight cars is 100 km/h only and decreases down to 70 km/h to 75 km/h with operation time because of insufficient routine repair quality. After modernization of the 18-100 truck model performed by Uralvagonzavod, the allowed speed of the cars, inter-repair mileage, operational safety and load-carrying ability were substantially increased and the truck-rail interactions (especially in curves) were reduced by constructional improvements of truck slippers, use of wear-resistant spacers of bearing seats and cover plates as well as polyurethane-covered cast iron or steel wedges. The fatigue strength of the spring beam and side frame (as a function of cycle number) were significantly increased (by 15 % to 25 %) after the modernization. The guaranteed operation life was increased from 3 years up to 8 years and the mileage from 300000 km up to 800000 km after modernization. The first general overhaul of the trucks has to be made after 16 years (not after 8 years) of operation.
