Automobile headlamps are highly regulated products where the bulb-lens combination must meet SAE and ECE color and beam photometry specifications. Currently, headlamps have clear or slightly blue tinted lenses, offering few possibilities to differentiate car platforms from one another. Edge glow technology provides a car manufacturer with an aesthetic look (edge glow effect) from the outer lens and allows for product differentiation through accent features in the outer lens. Additionally, this technology can improve the beam color by creating an interaction between the lens and the light source emission, while conforming to regulations, independent of the light source used. Potential applications include a lower cost alternative to high intensity discharge (HID) lamps in terms of lighting performance, while providing more comfort for the driver than regular halogen based systems. This paper details the edge glow headlamp system and provides preliminary performance data, and furthermore illustrates the possibility of creating a system based on a high luminous intensity halogen bulb in which the beam chromaticity is similar to a HID system. The potential benefits of such a system with regard to improved road visibility and glare are also discussed.
