In the area of automotive lighting, the bulb was the only light source available for the realisation of all lighting functions in the areas of front-lighting, rearlighting and interior lighting for many years. Within the past 10-15 years, gas discharge lamps and LEDs have been developed as headlamps and signal lamps/interior lamps respectively as alternative light sources to filament bulbs. These new light sources have various advantages over conventional bulbs in terms of a longer service life or power efficiency, and in the case of gas discharge lamps in particular, the advantage of a greater luminous flux and the light colour. The light emitting diode is becoming more and more significant in the field of external vehicle lighting. While benchmarking the existing products of different LED-suppliers it becomes clear that in the area of front-lighting applications in particular, it only makes sense to use high-power LEDs. This contribution will emphasize the advantages of the LED-technology being introduced in vehicles, but it will also clearly demonstrate the conditions necessary for applications to be successful. Taking the different concepts of connecting technologies for thermal management, the driver electronics necessary to handle power efficiently and the influence of luminous flux vs. luminance of these new light-sources into consideration (to name only some aspects of this complex matter), this article will sketch the present state-of-the art and offer an outlook for the future.
