Unlike the design of the exterior lighting, i.e. headlamps and rear lamps, there are no set design rules for interior lighting yet. This paper describes a method to assess ambient lighting systems on the basis of physiological experiments. The applied method is similar to glare rating systems known from vehicle head lighting. By choosing optimised luminances inside the vehicle, the adaptation level can be influenced positively. Tests were conducted for various areas and dimensions in the vehicle interior. From these tests a method could be derived that allows to asses the influence of additional luminances inside the vehicle on the driver's perception. On the basis of known glare assessment systems the evaluation method was determined. Formulae are known from vehicle lighting technology to describe the discomfort and disability glare caused by headlamps. The problem on hand can be compared with discomfort glare. A modification of the formulae can be applied to the problem of ambient interior lighting. There are differences with regard to the description of the disturbing light sources. In the investigations carried out here the luminance of the additional light sources in the vehicle was used as a criterion, furthermore the disturbance variable was described over the illuminated area. The illuminance on the eye of the observer is thus expressed in terms of luminance and the solid angle. Thus it is possible to calculate the influence to the driver for all areas of the vehicle. This can be conducted on the basis of simulation data or on luminance measurements carried out on prototypes. The interdependency between different vehicle areas is rather small and can be disregarded. The method gives on the one hand a design guideline for the development of new interior light concepts, on the other hand it can be the basis for the assessment of existing systems.
