The authors have demonstrated a technology for seismic wave sensors based on the optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG). This kind of sensor can perform accurate measurements small vibration, monitor seismic activity and assess damage due to their high sensitivity to dynamic strains. In this paper, the basic detection principle and its application in military seismic activity monitoring are introduced briefly. Systematic experiments were carried out in an outdoor environment and some simulated seismic wave sources were monitored. A good signal to noise ratio were observed, as well as a high dynamic range in this system. The response frequency of the FBG sensor detection system is designed to be 25 Hz. The ultimate object of this imbedded fiber optic (Bragg Grating) sensor system is to recognize the presence of troop or vehicle movement through their induced seismic activity as a helpful tool in battlefield monitoring.
