Electrical wire damage due to chemical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical mechanisms can impair the function of aircraft equipment and potentially cause catastrophic equipment failure and loss of life. Luna Innovations, Incorporated is developing a health monitoring system to anticipate and prevent the failure of electrical systems in military and commercial aircraft. Luna has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of an optical fiber based highly-spatially distributed sensing technology for monitoring strain, insulation damage, temperature and magnetic field strength. Insulation damage can be located to within one centimeter using a distributed sensing system. When fully developed, this system will locate insulation damage that can be quickly repaired without loss of function of the sensing system. The monitoring system will be capable of comparing the current state of a wiring system to any previously recorded state, such as the installed or repaired condition.
