The paper presents MAN B&W's new TCR-Series of radial turbine turbochargers which will be offered in six frame sizes - TCR12, TCR14, TCR16, TCR18, TCR20 and TCR22 - covering engine outputs per turbocharger of 390 to 5000 kW. As such, it aims to replace the seven sizes of the predecessor NR turbocharger range, extending the upper output limit from 4700 kW. As the new designation implies - the TCR nomenclature stands for TurboCharger Radial. The TCR machines are set to become the lower output range complement to the company's latest - and in the meantime extremely successful - TCA axial turbine turbochargers for engine outputs from 2800 to 31300 kW, launched in 2002. As prime development targets for the TCR range, MAN B&W cites high power density, universal applicability, and user-friendliness in terms of operation and servicing. According to MAN B&W, the new turbocharger's high power density capability is based on a combination of a high, 1:4.7 pressure ratio (up to 1:5.3 in high-pressure versions); high specific volume flows (up to 3.9 at maximum compression ratio in the TCR 18, the frame size scheduled to reach the market first); efficiencies of over 0.7, compact design; and low weight. The new turbocharger is designed to cover a full range of engines burning HFO and MDO, as well as dual fuel and SI gas engines, complying with present and future emissions standards and operating under boundary conditions. Technical detail of the TCR turbochargers comprises a compact, high performance plain bearing concept to optimise dynamic performance of the rotor and minimise mechanical losses. In combination, the shaft diameter has been optimised to increase efficiency. Compared with the NR predecessor range, the compressor of the TCR machines will feature an extended pressure ratio and specific volume flow and internal flow recirculation to attain an extended surge margin. For ease of servicing, repair and maintenance, the compressor wheel features a new method of fixation to the shaft and is more easily accessible. According to MAN B&W's introduction plan at the time of writing, theTCR18 turbocharger for engine outputs of 2350 kW will reach its first customer in February 2004 and the remaining models by the middle of 2006.
