Over the last fifty years, electronics and IT have totally transformed the definition and usage conditions of military aircraft as regards cockpit layout, pilot support, flight management systems, environment sensors, mission preparation, command transmission, reliability and general safety. At the same time, meticulous attention to ergonomics has ensured that the pilot (or crew) retains full control over mission fulfilment. This article, by a French fighter pilot, gives a factual description of progress in combat aircraft equipment designed and built in France for the French Airforce. It examines the impact of electronics and IT on operational mission conditions, making allowance for parallel developments in commend systems to adapt to new engagement hypotheses.
