General Motor's (GM) concept vehicle HydroGen3, based on the Opel Zafira production model, represents the third generation of fuel cell concept vehicles. The HydroGen3 emerged as the first prototype devoted to worldwide fuel cell vehicle testing in fleet demonstrations. The primary development goals were further improvements of performance and of the propulsion system's suitability for everyday use. The latest generation of fuel cell stacks is at the heart of the HydroGen3. This improved stack is comprised of a block of 200 individual, in-line fuel cells. The power density has been increased, they amount to 1.60 kWh/l or 0.94 kW/kg. The HydroGen3 stack delivers a constant performance of 94 kW and a peak performance of 129 kW. The fuel cells are fed by tanks containing either liquid hydrogen or compressed hydrogen. This provides for a driving range of 400 km or 270 km, respectively. Compared to the predecessor model numerous important details were markedly improved: - elimination of the high performance buffer battery; - optimization of the entire fuel cell system's architecture; - more compact electrical traction system. Safety aspects and efficiency and cost effectiveness will be decisive factors when it comes to the question of customer acceptance of the hydrogen-powered cars of the future. The HydroGen3 marks the newest and most comprehensive advance made by GM/Opel on the road to fuel cell vehicle market readiness.
