The Georgetown University (GU) Fuel Cell Transit Bus Program is the oldest continuous fuel cell vehicle development program in the world. The broad objective of the FTA (Federal Transit Administration) Fuel Cell Bus Program is to design, manufacture and test fully-integrated, heavy-duty transit buses. Several key elements distinguish the FTA Fuel Cell Transit Bus Program that have contributed to the successes to date. 1. Transit bus application; 2. Focus on liquid fuel; 3. Technology readiness; 4. Series-hybrid propulsion systems; 5. Full scale vehicle demonstrations, testing & reporting. In 1994, GU rolled out the first of three fuel cell powered hybrid electric 30-foot buses, the following two were rolled out in 1995. These buses are methanol-fueled, and are proof-of-concept vehicles called Test Bed Buses (TBBs). Each TBB uses a 50 kW PAFC power plant as the main energy source. To date, two fully functional 40-foot fuel cell transit buses have been fabricated and tested within this program. Vehicle testing is a key component of the FTA Fuel Cell Bus Program. Several key issues should be addressed in the near term to facilitate commercial acceptance of fuel cell transit buses: 1. Hybridization, 2. Affordability, 3. Fuel, 4. Methanol fuel, 5. Energy independence. The GU program is the only one of its kind that is addressing the commercialization of the easily refueled and longer range liquid-fueled fuel cell buses. It is essential to maintain fuel options.
