The primary task of active safety functions in road vehicles is to prevent accidents. In this manner, Active Safety (AS) functions collaborate with the driver vehicle system in order to increase the overall system performance in critical driving scenarios. Active safety issues can be associated with many different vehicle systems or components. The focus of this work is on chassis systems that provide steering intervention, such as lane keeping assist systems. Even other systems, which are more of a compensatory character, can make use of potential steering intervention, such as side-wind compensation feature. The primary task of so-called active safety functions in road vehicles is to prevent accidents, rather than reduce the consequences of the same, which is the task of passive safety. In this manner, active safety (AS) functions collaborate with the driver-vehicle system in order to increase the overall system performance in critical driving scenarios. The next step in the development of AS functions includes so-called collision avoidance systems, for instance lane keeping assist systems, requiring the possibility of influencing the vehicles steering characteristics. In order to meet these new demands, this paper presents the Active Pinion concept, which is a simple and cost-effective solution to supply additional torque to the steering column using a traditional hydraulic power steering system. The principal of this concept will be described and a control concept will be introduced and discussed.
