Software Engineers have made a considerable contribution to the development of automotive vehicles over the past two decades. As a result of their work, cars are safer, more efficient and more comfortable. Most engine control units, in-cabin electronic systems and powertrain control systems have been based on designs using 8 bit and 16 bit microprocessors. Very often these designs have used proprietary software based on an inhouse 'scheduler' that schedules tasks to run, maybe in a sequential pattern; these designs have been remarkably successful. A Realtime Operating System (RTOS) is software that will run on a Microprocessor or Digital Signal Processor in much the same way that Windows runs on the PC processor. It will enable multiple tasks to run simultaneously and deal with the peripheral components of the system. This is where the similarity ends, because a Real-time OS (RTOS) is developed for the engineering environment rather than the desktop. A RTOS will be considerably faster, more predictable, more robust and make more efficient use of resources. This article discusses the next generation of software development for automotive vehicles and why engineers are now choosing to use off the shelf Real-time Operating Systems as the foundation for software development in telematics, powertrain, drive by wire and other automotive electronic systems.
