This paper will discuss Ultra Wideband (UWB) radio technology, the next evolution step in WLAN/WPAN, and its characteristics. Considering the need for extremely high data rates in roadside hotspots, UWB will prove to be a viable candidate for the wireless technology to be used. It is also the best choice for implementing Short Range Radar (SRR) for cars. Ad Hoc networking will be also considered as the next innovative move towards a standard automotive network topology. When combined with the stationary WLAN hotspots, Ad Hoc networks will provide a rapidly deployable, self-organizing and extendible solution. A brief introduction of project COMBUS will follow as an example of the ongoing work on automotive network development and applications of UWB in mobile telematics.
