Virtual testing has become an essential part of the vehicle design process, where increasing demands are placed on simulations with respect to predictive capabilities, robustness, and efficiency in CPU as well as model preparation time. Airbag simulation has become an effective tool in restraint system design. Combining Finite Element airbag models with multibody models of crash dummies limits CPU demands, thereby allowing optimisation studies to be completed within days. Traditionally, the uniform pressure assumption was sufficiently accurate, but more advanced gas flow modelling techniques are needed for demanding airbag simulation cases such as side airbags and out of position loading of frontal airbags (OOP). In these complex simulation cases, there is strong interaction between airbag and occupant during the deployment phase. Solutions are provided using fluid dynamics techniques (CFD), by efficient methods to determine the initial state of the folded airbag and by improving the robustness of the contact algorithm and the element and material formulations. The accurate prediction of neck load and chest deflection imposes additional requirements on the dummy models. MADYMO solutions include full FE dummy models for side impact and OOP as well as a full set of efficient multibody models.
