Many energy companies and car manufacturers are currently developing a strategy for the gradual introduction of hydrogen as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels. In particular, for automotive applications hydrogen can be used to fuel a Polymeric Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) which is considered the most promising solution as it operates very efficiently while producing little or no vehicle emissions. Nevertheless, some basic targets have to be achieved before fuel cells become a really competitive technology. In this paper the integration of a FC based powertrain is analysed to design a zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) using different technical solutions. PEMFC for automotive applications can be used with the fuel cell stack as the unique on board energy source or hybridising the power generation system with some other energy source (batteries or Internal Combustion Engines - ICE). The pure fuel cell vehicle and the hybrid battery / fuel cell vehicle are both zero emission solutions and, for these reasons, have been analysed by means of a properly developed numerical model, comparing the efficiencies of different configurations in terms of hydrogen consumption. In particular, considering a typical medium size urban vehicle and with reference to different driving cycles, it is possible to individuate an optimum value in terms of distribution of the requested power between the battery and the fuel cell stack.
