DC link capacitors in voltage source inverters are used to reduce the voltage ripple on the DC bus and to provide the reactive power for the induction motor. Usually aluminium electrolytic capacitors are used because of their favourable capacity to cost ratio. DC link capacitors in voltage source inverters belong to the components, which have a substantial influence on system cost and reliability. Due to the heating up by the alternative current, which flows through the capacitor, lifetime is limited, therefore the alternating current load is an important design criterion. In this report the application of an Integrated Starter Generator is considered. The capacitor current is evaluated as a function of load angle of the engine, of the modulation factor and the current flowing in the DC link capacitor. Further criteria for the dimensioning of the capacitor represent the DC voltage ripple and the switching losses of the power semiconductors, respectively, which both depend on modulation frequency. It has been shown in the paper that in inverter designs always power density, system cost and efficiency have to be considered simultaneously and can not be given independntly of each other.
