The use of contactless sensor could be considered for safety-critical application only if the reliability allows a complete trust in the delivered information. Beside the 'contactless' demand, the sensor should work without friction of the moving parts and thus allowing big air gaps. A high performance transducer technology for displacement sensing coupled with the functionality of an useful ASIC has been developed to fulfil these requirements. The described sensor technology offers the system designers a new freedom for advanced product conception. It can be integrated in a small volume and easily adapted to any geometry, angular or linear. The use of a standard technology and material makes the design cost effective. With this large range of use, IMS (Inductive Magnetic Saturation) can become the standard technology for displacement sensing. Integration into the PCB allows a better system integration and opens the way to cost effective 'SMART'-devices for mechatronics. The functionality of the associated electronic (calibration, diagnosis, digital and analog output...) open the way to safety-critical use of contactless sensors in the automotive industry.
