The constant drive for better fuel economy and lower emissions from automotive vehicles of today has led to increasingly stringent requirements in the development of Engine Management Systems. Such technology is being pushed to the limits with the need for improved control and monitoring of individual combustion events. The application of cylinder based control and diagnostics techniques have therefore attracted much attention in recent years. In particular, the use of cylinder pressure as a feedback signal offers potential improvements in fuel consumption, emissions, On-Board Diagnosis (OBD) as well as a smoother running engine. This technology is becoming more practical for automotive applications in the near future as on-board microprocessing power increases and new robust pressure sensing materials become more affordable. AENEAS was a collaborative project between Ricardo, DaimlerChrysler, EADS and Kistler with financial support from the European Commission and the Swiss Government. Its aim was to demonstrate some of the benefits of CPEMS technology on a Spark Ignition (SI) engine. This paper describes the background to this project and presents some of the results obtained.
