In light-weight construction of vehicles, joining technologies are a major focus in research. New or enhanced joining technologies allow an increase in productivity and new ways of construction. With the Laser-GMA-Hybrid-Welding technology a coupled process has been introduced into industrial production. After first successful applications in steel construction and further developments, this technology has proven its potential in aluminium light-weight construction. While applications in steel construction focus on the joining of thicker plates, such as in ship building, Laser-GMA-Hybrid welding of aluminium materials is primarily used for thinner materials in automobile and railway waggon manufacturing. First applications in ship building are currently being evaluated. As the demands for gap bridging abilities exceed the possibilities of laser alone, under the pressure of growing needs for a faster welding, this method - supported by the great advancements in the laser technology during the last two decades - has evolved from its niche position to a method with a large application spectrum. The research presented here demonstrates that this method is suitable for application in the transportation technology.
