In order to shorten the overall time to market and to minimise very expensive changes after design release or production start, high performance test facilities are necessary. These facilities have to be able to fulfil the today's requirements of the development engineers as well as having enough reserve for future enhancements and expansions. In order to develop and improve heat exchangers and the thermal behaviour of other components it is important to simulate test conditions near to these found in the final use of these components. Different parameters are to be considered: -Air flow speed through the heat exchanging component ; -Ambient temperature working range; -Ambient pressure working range; -Ambient humidity working range. In this test facility it is possible to simulate most of the important conditions met in different types of heat exchanger and, if necessary, at a time in the development stage when the final engines or finished vehicles are not available. The object is to test all the thermo-management components of a front mounted engine under variable wind speed and variable air temperature conditions such as: -Coolant heat exchanger; -Engine oil heat exchanger; -Gearbox oil heat exchanger; -Intercooler heat exchanger. These conditioning units are usually located in thermo wind tunnels or in climatic wind tunnels as additional lasting features. All required media like coolant, engine oil, gearbox oil, combustion air are supplied from a separate conditioning unit. Different load situations in different mounting positions can be simulated without running the engine and/or the vehicle on a roller test stand. All the conditioning units for liquid media need an fill and empty function as well as the possibility to remove the air during filling. Usually oil heat exchangers do not have a ventilation hole. These systems ventilate over the crankcase sump or the gearbox sump. Here it is necessary to add an additional ventilation function in the filling system. A power supply for the electrical fans of the coolant system is also necessary.
