Thermal management in the sense of this paper can be summarised as the optimisation of the vehicle's heat balance through an intelligent control and the prioritisation of the energy fluxes. Optimised cooling systems necessitate an extended controllability, especially under part load conditions which are not critical for the cooling. For this application switchable or controllable actuators are necessary, which guarantee the targeted control of the coolant flow and airflow in the vehicles' cooling systems. This deals with components for the cooling air flow management as well as for the coolant flow management like fan design, airflow control elements, coolant circuit, coolant pump and coolant control valve.
