The finite element program ABAQUS is used to conduct a parametric study on pipeline puncture under external interference loading by excavator teeth. A user-defined material failure model as described in a companion paper (Int J Pressure Vessel Piping (2003)) is used to predict ductile failure. The influence of tooth size and shape, pipeline diameter and wall thickness, internal pressure, material grade, and tooth position and orientation on the puncture load are investigated. A design equation giving the puncture load for contact normal to a pipeline is derived and compared with existing experimental data.
