The influence of two ISG Systems on vehicle emissions is investigated and compared. It is shown for both ISG systems that with heuristic control strategies, emission reductions can be achieved by introducing engine stop/start and regenerative braking functionality. Especially for CO2, significant reductions can be seen, ranging up to 10 % for ISG system 2. With the help of DoE, for both Systems also an optimal control setting for the Model Predictive Controller is determined. With this, CO2 and NOx emissions are reduced even further. While the CO2 reductions stay below 5 %, the NOx-emissions are strongly reduced: 16% for ISG system 1 and 32 % for ISG system 2. Deactivations of the engine's deceleration fuel cut-off functionality as well as electric propulsion assist functionality contribute to this sharp improvement. The used tool Design of Experiment is a valuable tool to obtain a lot of information about a System. The models of hybrid vehicles have a good quality and main influences and interactions can be described. All kinds of graphical displays are possible for which output variables are plotted over 1 or 2 input variables. So-called single influence diagrams can likewise be plotted for which the main effects of each single variable on each individual output variable is depicted. In addition, optimisation can be performed according to various criteria. Further analysis operations are also possible without new tests. Qualified DoE models can be built with existing tests or full models are possible with a few additional tests. DoE models can predict results that have not been simulated before. The eventual choice for a particular Integrated Starter Generator System should also take into account other important aspects, like engine crank performance, packaging possibilities and variable cost of the ISG Systems, where cost per percent CO2 or NOx reduction should be competitive to other systems.
