By integrating CFD results into experimental analysis one combines the strengths of both disciplines. Thus the investigation of functional, thermally heavily used components requires a precise and highly dependable prediction of thermal loads so that their functionality can be assessed for lifetime. A CFD analysis conducted at medium precision can quickly provide valuable information about complex spatial structures of temperature distributions and flow fields. The computed results support experimentalists in both reducing cost as well as improving analysis accuracy. Here, a modular approach is applied - by focussing on a single module only that has been meshed at a significantly higher resolution, more complex physics can be taken into account: transient computations including free convection and thermal radiation become feasible. The advantage of this approach is illustrated by a thermal analysis that has been carried out for an AUDI concept vehicle focussing on maximum velocity conditions as well as the transient cool down behaviour of the car. The results obtained identified this methodology to be extremely powerful when assessing concept variations.
