Aluminum alloys are widely used in heat exchangers because the materials have high specific strength and good thermal conductivity. A new alloy fin stock for automobile heat exchangers has been developed by strengthening the dispersion of intermetallic compounds. This new alloy is an Al-Fe-Ni-Si system alloy cast by a twin-roll continuous casting method. At a thickness of 0.06 mm, the new alloy fin stock's mechanical strength after the brazing process is 130 MPa, and its electrical conductivity is more than 50 % IACS. 3000-series alloys commonly used für fin stock have mechanical strength of about 110 MPa and electrical conductivity below 40 % IACS. Thus this improvement in mechanical strength was achieved without any decrease in electrical conductivity, and these properties make the alloy very suitable for thinning.
