The paper is a continuation of one presented at VTMS5 on advancement of CO2 air conditioning (AC) and heat pump (HP) systems. Much progress has been made, especially in the area of vehicular heat pumps. CO2 AC/HP systems show significant promise and have distinct advantages compared to the AC and heating systems that are available today. Passenger comfort in both modes is enhanced and the additional fuel consumption needed for today's automotive HVAC systems can be reduced, while at the same time exhibiting environmentally friendly behavior. Due to its distinctly different thermal properties, CO2 requires some significant re-engineering and opens many new options for thermal management in AC and HP mode. A market introduction could begin in only a few years when current bottlenecks (fluid connectors and cost effectiveness) are overcome.
