Production technologies must be cost effective for primary magnesium to become an economically viable alternative material for widespread automotive applications. In this article, the prices at which magnesium becomes competitive with aluminium and steel are examined, including magnesium production cost estimates for current and future scenarios using electrolytic and thermal processes. The economic viability of the industry for automotive applications is also examined in the context of magnesium market price, taking into consideration the dynamics of its supply and demand as well.
