Adaptive Cruise Control and Parking Aid Systems are already introduced in the automotive market for years. Another area of interest on driver assistance is the lateral control of the vehicle. Systems that will warn the driver and/or will steer the vehicle to prevent an unintended lane departure are already available. Using the well designed infrastructure of the present roads video image processing will determine the road geometry and the present driving path by detecting the lines on the road surface. By active steering and/or braking of individual wheels the Lane Keeping Support (LKS) system assists the driver in his lateral control of the car. Beside these applications additional driver assistance systems will show up within the next years. Advanced functionalities using existing sensor and actuation technologies (e.g. for ACC) will help to reduce fatalities or will mitigate crash results within the next future. Systems to provide assistance to the driver an parking manoeuvres or on its ride in bad whether conditions or during the night are in development, and will be on the market within the next three years. All types of driver assistance and safety applications based on environmental sensing can be grouped into four categories: longitudinal support, lateral support, low speed manoeuvres (incl. reversing) and vision enhancement.
