Assuming the pilot keeps some control over the airplane during ditching and is able to perform a landing approach close to instructions given in the flight manual, the manufacturer has to prove the survivability of passengers and a safe post-ditching egress. The paper presents a hybrid computational method to simulate planned ditching of a transport aircraft. Based on a global/local approach, a time-domain method is derived. The coupling of the global structure and the fluid dynamics is implemented analytically using a beam structural model embedded in a discrete, 3-dimensional contour mesh for the fluid forces. A comparison with previous experiments on a scaled aircraft model hag given confidence in the applicability of the method. Computational speed of the algorithm enables the user to perform sensitivity analyses as well as to study the influence of design changes on ditching behaviour.
