This paper is reviewing possible methods of electricity production on a handysize bulkcarrier (15000- 50000 tdw)with an electricity consumption at sea of approx. 400 kW. The choice of an optimum electricity production system for that type of ship has been based on economical and ecological aspects. It has been demonstrated that in view of the forthcoming strict regulations on SQ(x) emission levels, in Europe and worldwide it is not anymore prudent, to install on board a new built ship, 3 GenSets operating on HFO (Heavy Fuel Oil), as in harbours they have to be switched over to low sulphur fuels. The proposed instead set of one shaft generator and 2 GenSets operating on MDO (Marine Diesel Oil) proved (based on realistic costs) to be a best solution, rendering significant savings, and at the same time protecting the marine environment. The selection criteria of ship electrical power plant type are described in more detail. Shaft generators are an attractive proposal thanks to the development of reliable constant frequency generator drives to serve low-speed direct coupled engines. All MAN B&W and Sulzer low-speed engines can be now offered with a shaft generator constant frequency type driven by the main engine through a step-up gear and further a planetary gear which maintains constant frequency of the alternator with varying main engine revolutions from 100 % down to 50 % of its nominal revolutions, what for ships with fixed-pitch propellers correponds to an engine load from 100 % down to aprox. 28 %. This generator arrangement is completely different from previously used which were based on frequency converters of electronic or electric nature, i.e. thyristors and a synchronous condenser or of a rotary type. Finally the problem of operational costs is discussed. It has been found that the the variant of two generator sets marine diesel oil fuelled plus shaft generator is the most economical. A unifuel ship (heavy diesel oil for main engine and three generator sets fuelled with heavy diesel oil) is more costly (by 21000 US-dollar/year).
