This paper briefly reviews the process of numerical optimization of sedan body panels to reduce the vehicle interior noise for the spare wheel well as the example. The results of the shape optimization showed a rather modest decrease of the objective function compared to others known in the literature. However, a reasonable solution has been found. Contribution analysis confirmed that the major bulge of vibration has been extinguished. The small decrease of the objective function of only 1.2 dB may be subject to the long structural transmission path between the excitation and the particular component. Further, the component at the bottom of the trunk vibrates as a rigid body. Including the consideration of the trunk lid will likely improve the situation since it would compensate vertical rigid body motions of the spare wheel well. This improvement becomes evident in the statistic average of all vehicles. For that reason, a contribution like this optimization of a spare wheel well is understood as one step of designing the acoustic behavior of sedan body structures.
