KolTram PLC developed a method of hardening of rolling surface of the rail sections used for the turnouts production comprising the flame heating and accelerated cooling with water-air mist. Usage of this method results in a significant increase of hardness of surface layer of the sections compared to the hardness of the head of a rail section cooled in still air following the rolling process. The hardness of rolling surface of the rail sections made from 900A steel after hardening by means of this methods was contained in the range of 350 - 380 HB combined with total elongation A5 min. 10 %. In the paper the physical metallurgy principles of the process based upon the results of the physical simulations conducted on the Gleeble 3800 system are presented.
