High-speed ground transportation by means of rail has already been a practical solution to relieve the demanding needs fer intercity journeys worldwide. Nowadays, trains can reach speeds of 300 kph to 500 kph or even higher. Usually, high operating speeds generate many aerodynamic and acoustic concerns that will not be encountered at all at low speed. The minimization of the direct environmental impact to the public of high-speed train operations is a major area of concern. As such, in the town planning stage, there is a tendency to specify that sections of the high-speed railway system should be covered or even built completely underground. Operation experiences worldwide indicate that such an underground or covered construction of trackways has already caused many engineering problems, e.g. sonic boom from the tunnel portals and openings, the aural pressure comfort issue in relation to passengers onboard the trains, design considerations with respect to the train structure and civil structure, special design of air-conditioning system onboard. When a railway station is also constructed underground with the adjoining tunnels, passengers in the station will be subjected directly to the pressure and velocity fluctuations generated by the operation of high-speed trains. The objective of this paper is to review the aerodynamic aspects of a high-speed railway station with adjoining tunnels. Issues such as pressure comfort and safety considerations for passengers in station, pressure wave generation, station and tunnel design, and a simple case study to mitigate the adverse aerodynamic impacts on passengers in station will be addressed.
