Large flexible structures are extensively used in many space applications, for example, space based radar antennae, space robotic systems, and space station, etc. The flexibility of these large space structures results in problems of structure shape deformation and vibration, etc. In recent years, active control methods have been developed to improve the performance of these flexible space structures, with most of them focused on the suppression of structural vibration. In this paper, we developed an approach for active robust shape control of flexible structures using piezoceramic actuators and strain sensors. First, dynamic models for flexible structures with integrated actuators and sensors are derived. A controller is designed to control the actual shape of the structure to follow a specified shape and reject disturbances. The control system robustness of flexible structures with parameter perturbation uncertainty is discussed. This active robust shape control method is tested via experimental implementation.
