Detection and classification of buried objects is still an unsolved issue, although it is of the greatest interest in various fields such as minehunting operations, pipe survey or archeological research. Sound penetration inside sediment needs the use of low frequencies, which does not really comply with a high-resolution requirement. Thus, classical sonar beamforming does not appear adequate for the purpose of small buried object classification. There are two techniques that enable us to overcome these problems. The first is the synthetic aperture process that is well established for high- and medium-frequency sonar. The second makes use of the non-linearity effects of water acoustic propagation to create a low frequency signal from a higher frequency source. These two methods are currently being investigated by Groupe d'Etudes Sous-Marines de l'Atlantique (GESMA), and in other laboratories. This paper outlines some experimental results obtained over the course of two years and presents the novelty of sonar data acquisition and a 3D acoustical imaging concept which has been created to extract a buried target shape. An underwater facility designed to be close to a future operational device is then presented. Several experiments have been done since 2000. Some of them have been conducted above a tank sitting at the bottom of a pool while others have been at sea. Various objects such as a dummy mine, a rock, a cylinder, a sphere and a ladder have been buried.
