A semi-active control for a quarter car suspension system with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper has been considered. For vibration control of the automotive suspension system, model-reference sliding mode controller has been used as the system controller and the continuous-state damper controller has been designed to adjust the appropriate input voltage to the MR damper. Two reference models have been analysed. Based on the analysis, a better reference model could be chosen. The performances and characteristics of the car suspension system under two road excitations have been evaluated through computer simulation. Under the bump excitation, the displacement of the vehicle body has been reduced and the settling time is faster comparing to the passive system with constant 0 V input voltage. Under the random excitation, the suspension system with the controlled MR damper can significantly reduce the root-mean-square values of both acceleration and displacement, as compared to the passive systems. It should be noted that the power consumption for the controlled MR damper is much less than that of the system with constant voltage. According to the results, the controlled system with ideal skyhook reference model is the most effective for surpressing vibration of the sprung mass as compared to other systems in this study. In addition, the effectiveness of the MR suspension system has been demonstrated via hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS). Under sinusoidal excitation, it shows the improvement in reducing the displacement and acceleration. These results again show that the controlled MR suspension system with ideal skyhook reference model can significantly improve the ride comfort.
